The word perimenopause gets thrown around in a confusing manner in a way that describes a type of irreversible demise of the menstrual cycle mired with insomnia, hot flashes, weight gain and rage. Nothing about this word brings visions of unicorns and rainbows! In our society, the word has become synonymous with “out of control” as if there is nothing you can do to make the process smoother when in fact there are so many ways to support and ease these changes. There are endless misconceptions about the true meaning of perimenopause and what women can really expect during this phase of life. For some women, there are no real changes until the menstrual cycle fully ceases and yet other women are hit hard with unpleasant and unpredictable hormonal changes in their mid-thirties. An overwhelming number of women are suffering with symptoms they aren’t attributing to their hormones at all and don’t even know they can seek help.
Why the variation? What is perimenopause all about and what can you do about it?
